Passiflora (Passiflora incarnata)

Passiflora or “passionflower,” which is also known as “passionfruit,” is native to the USA. The long, trailing stems have alternate leaves that are a beautiful shade of green and large purple and white flowers.    

Passionflowers were discovered in the 15th century in the Amazonian forest by the Spanish conquistadors. They were given their name by the Jesuit missionaries who were part of the expeditions. The missionaries were convinced there was an analogy to be drawn between the morphology of these flowers and the objects associated with Christ’s Passion. The dual crown of purple filaments reminded them of Jesus’ crown of thorns, the three stigmas recalled the nails, the five stamens represented the hammers, the 3-lobed leaves recalled the spear and finally, the tendrils evoked the whip used to inflict pain on Jesus during his Passion.
